Makara Jyothi Yatra
The Yātrā to Śabarimalā is one of the most hoary and hallowed pilgrimages undertaken across the divine lands of Bhāratavarśa. Attracting millions of devotees over a span of around two months (November - January), innumerable "Ayyappanmārs" journey to the otherworldly abode of Ayyappa nestled within the sacramental forests of the Western Ghāṭs - also called the Pūṅgā Vanam or the pleasure gardens of the Supreme Lord, Dharma Śāstā.
Hardening one's body and mind with austerity and one-pointed focus on Ayyappa, numerous Ayyappanmārs undertake the Maṇḍala Vratam and ensure its completion with the Darśanam of Hariharasuta at Śabarimalā. Entailing celibacy, ritual purity, and strict dietary and physical discipline the Vratam sharpens one's commitment not only to Ayyappa and spiritual upliftment, but also prepares one's mind to accept the Advaita Lakṣya preached by Ayyappa Himself in the form of the Mahāvākya - Tat Tvam Asi.
Of the near 2 month span, the temple witnesses influx of Ayyappanmārs - the Makara Saṅkramaṇa day is of special importance, for that is when Bhagavān maintains his unwavering promise of revealing His Darśanam in the form of the hallowed Makara Jyoti, year after year. This usually falls on either the 14th or 15th of January each year.
Shri Maha Sasthru Seva Sangam undertakes its annual Śabarimalā Yātrā in time to witness the Lord's unmatched Jyoti Darśanam. Our Sangam continues to remain among the few Paramparās that still follow the traditional forest path tread by Maṇikaṇṭhan Himself. Stopping at the traditional Koṣṭhas, Tāvaḷams, and hallowed sites where Bhagavān stationed His Gaṇādhipas and Adhiṣṭhātri Devatās, our Sangam offers ritual worship at each of these sites - some nestled deep within the recesses of the Lord's divine forests.
Besides the Yātrā to Bhagavān's divine Sannidhānam, we also conduct traditional Annadānam and Pūjās on the sacramental banks of the hallowed Pampā at Periyānavaṭṭam - a site known for its spiritual merit. Across 3 days, our Sangam provides Annadānam to Bhaktas, while also conducting Pūjās such as Śāstā Prīti, Bhagavatī Sevā, Śāstṛ Homam, Rudrābhiśekam and Puṣpābhiśekam as well as Bhajana Saṅgamam and the penultimate offering to the Lord - Āzhi Pūjā - before departing from his sacred domain.
Transcending the limitations of body, mind, and the identifications that come with it, we call upon all Āstikas, Bhaktas and Ayyappanmārs to come join us and be a part of our services to the Lord.
Any contributions in either cash or kind would go toward serving the Lord and His Bhaktas. This year's Makara Jyoti Annadānam is scheduled to occur from the 12th January 2026 until the night of 14th January 2026. Further details of the items required and the itinerary for the 3 days are provided below.
